Help! Parenting Means Teaching Doctrine
For
parents who are looking for aids to family worship and teaching your covenant
children the Shorter Catechism, here are two suggestions:
-
First, The Catechism for Young
Children is a great little booklet. It puts the catechism to cartoons
that help our concrete, visual young ones to grasp what is being conveyed in
the doctrines of the catechism. This booklet, in two volumes, is now
available on the church resource table.
-
Second is a book, Training
Hearts, Teaching Minds by Starr Meade. The book goes through all 107
questions in the Westminster Shorter Catechism and has six daily devotions
on each. The idea is that every day for a week you will recite the question
and answer for that week followed by reading the devotion for that day.
There are six devotions per question leaving the Lord’s Day for your own
family worship. After the week is done, your child should have the question
and answer memorized. After two years, your child will have the entire
Shorter Catechism memorized.
Both of these
resources are great ways to teach your children the doctrines of our holy
religion, to encourage a daily family worship, and to incorporate
catechizing into family worship!
